The Great Strahov Stadium (Velký strahovský stadion) - Prague, Czech Republic

The Great Strahov Stadium - Prague - 2010

The biggest stadium in the world is found in Prague. On a trip in 2009 I photographed it from the tower overlooking the old town.

It held 200,000 people when full and is only second to the indianapolis speedway in terms of size. You can fit 9 (nine) full size football pitches in it.

Nowadays it is owned by the Prague council and is pretty much in ruins. Sparta Prague use it for training and have built portakabins onto some of the pitches inside.

It's found in a pretty rough area of Prague and when I was there it was being used as a car park and for a car cleaning buisness. It's like an old biscuit and it crumbling to bits. In it's heyday it was used for communist era parades and celebrations but now is a forgotten piece of history as the country tries to move away from it's past.

  1. It's still this way in 2020, and even more pretty...
